BEYOND THE BORDER: WHERE REALITY LOOKS AWAY

BEYOND THE BORDER
Beyond the Border is a song about a place that cannot exist, except for a moment.
At first, everything seems tangible: evening light, an empty chair, a room, a hand resting in another hand. Yet almost immediately, the familiar world begins to lose its certainty. Roads acquire other names. The clock forgets the hour. Mirrors cease to reflect the present and open instead onto “lives we almost lived.”
The border of the title is therefore never simply a geographical one. It may be the border between memory and reality, between waking and dreaming, between presence and absence — perhaps even between life and death. The song refuses to decide.
For one impossible moment, that border seems to disappear:
As though the world
Had finally learned
To let us in.
It is one of the central paradoxes of the song. The two people appear to have reached the place they were searching for, yet it is described as “a journey home that never was.” Home is not somewhere they can return to. It belongs to another possibility: a life that might have existed, but did not.
This is why the mirrors matter. They do not show who the two people are. They reveal what might have been. And when reality returns, they close again, one by one.
Time behaves in much the same way. For a while it appears willing to suspend its rules. “Nothing needed words. Everything remained.” But the reprieve cannot last. Light begins to leave a face. Dawn arrives. The person who was present becomes a memory.
The cruelty of morning is that it restores the ordinary world.
The room remained.
You didn’t.
Almost everything in Beyond the Border is contained in those four words. Places survive us. Chairs remain empty. Morning enters the same room as before. Light returns as though nothing has happened. Reality continues with an indifference that grief finds almost impossible to understand.
Near the end, the song offers its quietest explanation:
Love borrows time.
Dreams return it.
Perhaps love can temporarily make us believe that time belongs to us. Memory and dreams can even give some of it back. But only on loan. Eventually the border reappears.
And so the final image returns to the beginning: a room and an absence.
The room is still there.
You aren’t.
BEYOND THE BORDER
A shadow in the evening light.
Every road another name.
An empty chair.
As though you’d only stepped away.
A room beyond the years.
Where time no longer knocked
Your tender lips
The only language left between us
You looked at me.
As though the world
Had finally learned
To let us in.
Beyond the border.
A journey home that never was.
Even our names forgot us.
Mirrors opened one by one.
Onto lives we almost lived.
Reality
Looked away
The clock forgot the hour.
Your hand still rested in mine.
Nothing needed words.
Everything remained
For one impossible moment.
The light began
To leave your face.
I watched you.
Become a memory.
I tried to hold the morning still.
But dawn
Has never learned
Mercy.
The room remained
You didn’t
Beyond the border.
We almost found our home.
The world remembered nothing.
Not even why
We came.
The mirrors slowly closed again.
One by one.
Leaving only
The empty room.
We crossed a border.
No one followed.
Morning found the room.
Only the light
Came back.
Love borrows time.
Dreams return it.
When I reached for you.
The room was still there.
You weren’t.
