TRUTH IS A STRANGE COUNTRY AND NOTHING STAYS

Truth is a Strange Country lyrics

Truth Is a Strange Country is a song about memory, but memory as an unreliable place.

From the beginning, the ordinary world is slightly displaced. Morning arrives “wearing the wrong season.” Distance can be folded “like an old map.” Streets remember footsteps and an afternoon quietly exchanges itself for another year.

Time no longer follows the clock. It follows memory.

The title contains the central idea. Truth is not presented as something fixed that can be discovered. It is a country: a landscape we enter, revisit and perhaps never fully understand.

Silence shapes that landscape.

You asked nothing.
I answered anyway.

There is no conversation, yet one continues. What was never said has survived as strongly as what actually happened. Even silence becomes something physical — something that “needs somewhere to sleep.”

Later, the song suggests that perhaps the past has not disappeared at all:

The houses
Were never abandoned.
Only translated.

Translation preserves meaning while changing its form. The same may be true of places, people and memories. They remain, but in a language we can no longer completely understand.

And memory itself keeps changing:

How many times
Can a memory
Change its clothes?

Every return to the past alters it slightly. That is why the final instruction is not to leave everything as it was, but:

Leave everything
Exactly
As we forgot it.

The distinction is crucial. Reality has become less important than the version of it that survived.

Then comes the most unsettling line:

Who almost lived here.

Not who lived here. Almost. As if the song is mourning not only what disappeared, but also everything that might have existed and never quite did.

At the end, the human presence is gone:

Only the road
Kept walking.

Perhaps that is the strange country of the title: the place between what happened, what we remember, and what might have been.

AND THE DOG ON THE COVER?

The dog on the cover does not illustrate the song. It does not represent a character in the lyrics or explain what happened.

It is simply there.

TRUTH IS A STRANGE COUNTRY

Morning arrived
Wearing the wrong season.
The trees stood closer
Than I remembered.
Someone had folded
The distance between us
Like an old map
No longer leading anywhere.
You asked nothing.
I answered anyway.

There are streets
That keep your footsteps
Long after they forget your name.
I have walked them all.
Every window
Looked as though
Someone had just left.
Or never came.

Truth is a strange country.
It waits for no one.
It simply grows
Around the things
We never dared to say.
Leave the light
Not for me.
For the room
That still believes
Someone is coming home.
Don’t close the door.
Not because of hope.
Because silence
Needs somewhere
To sleep.

A bird crossed
An empty parking lot.
For a moment
It looked like
It remembered me.
Then the wind
Changed its mind.
The afternoon
Quietly exchanged itself
For another year.

I kept walking.
As if the road
Had been waiting longer
Than I had.

Perhaps we never lost each other.
Perhaps
Time simply
Learned another language.

Perhaps the houses
Were never abandoned.
Only translated.

How many times
Can a Memory
Change its clothes?
How many times
Can you return
Without arriving?

I kept your silence
Like a Key
That never fit.
Any door.

Leave everything
Exactly
As we forgot it.
The chair.
The window.
The unfinished sentence.

If tomorrow
Finds this place again,
Let it wonder
Who almost lived here.

The footsteps stopped.
Only the road
Kept walking.
